Our Story

The Princeton University Store is a not-for-profit cooperative society whose members share in the profits. As a co-op, it operates differently than an ordinary corporation. It is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of students, faculty, administrators, and alumni. Additionally, instead of paying dividends to Wall Street shareholders, it gives discounts to its members. Members receive a 10% discount on nearly everything in the store. The co-op has two current locations: the downtown location on 114-116 Nassau Street and the on-campus location at 36 University Place.

The U-Store is the oldest business still in operation in Princeton. Begun as a student enterprise in a single dorm room in West College, the store organized as a campus cooperative in 1905. In 1907, the store expanded to the entire first floor of West College. The store then moved to a building of its owned (designed by Eldredge Snyder ’22) at 36 University Place in 1958.

In November 2007, a second location was opened on Nassau Street and was later remodeled in 2018. The Nassau Street location took over as the main apparel retailer for the Princeton University Store. The campus store shifted its primary focus to food, technology, and dorm needs. It also houses Pequod Printing Services, which provides course packets and thesis binding services to students.

In 2020, the campus store, located on University Place, remodeled. Its main level focuses on groceries, health & beauty, apparel, gifts, and accessories. Its lower level houses dorm essentials, technology, school supplies, and Pequod Printing Services. The U-Store offers many services, including FedEx shipping, dry cleaning with Craft Cleaners, coffee with Starbucks' machine, free water refills, member self-checkout, and more.

  • Before the U-Store became what it is known today, a student agency in the 1880s-1890s spearheaded the initiative to operate a store within one of the Dean's offices.
  • In its early days, the U-Store not only served as a hub for academic supplies and Princeton gear, but also housed a music store.
  • Embracing the digital age, we embarked on a new frontier in 1998 with the launch of our first online store.
  • You can often find us at various athletic events, where we set up pop-up stores. So next time you're cheering on the Tigers, be sure to swing by and say hello!
